Aluminum hydroxide
Aluminum hydroxide (Al(OH)₃, ATH)is amphoteric hydroxide of aluminum.
In nature, it is found as the mineral gibbsite and its three rarer polymorphs: bayerite, doyleite, and nordstrandite.
The most closely related are aluminum oxide hydroxide (AlO(OH)) and aluminum oxide or alumina (Al2O3), and the difference of the two lies only in the water loss.
Aluminum hydroxide made with bauxite has the chemical formula, Al(OH)₃ or Al₂O₃ · 3H₂O.
It easily reacts to acids and alkalis and dissolves.
Because it is stable up to 200℃, above which crystal water is dehydrated absorbing a large amount of heat, it is used widely for flame retardants.
Aluminum hydroxide is also used in a wide range of industrial application thanks to its free water content and standard particle size.

Aluminum Hydroxide At Large (Summary)
Aluminum hydroxide has 2.423 specific gravity, and is manufactured by using bauxite through the Bayer process.
The chemical formula is Al(OH)3. It is stable up to approximately 200℃, over which temperature it is decomposed to water and alumina by
thermal-depolymerization.
It also reacts to strong acid and strong alkali, and yields aluminum oxide and aluminate, etc.
Aluminum hydroxide is dehydrated at 200~350℃ and absorbs much of heat while dissolving.
Therefore, if used as rubber or plastic filler, it can repress temperature rise and
combustion to reduce the risk of fire, and reduces occurrence of smoke and toxic gases upon fire.
It can repress smoke even when spark flies up.
All of the foregoing makes it the perfect product for flame-retardant filler.
Use/Application
Raw material of aluminum sulfate, filler of artificial marble, EPS, flame-retardant for construction material and electric wire, heat-proof material, and
adhesive, etc.
